Hallo,
“The Chronicle”
estimated length: 40-50 minutes
format: digital
completion time: end of 2006
The documentary film’s storyline will evolve around a search for a
lost chronicle of a northern Moravian village of Šléglov, formerly
Schlögelsdorf, taken up by its 26-year-old native František.
Šléglov is an 800-year-old village in a once German-inhabited region
in the Czech Republic, formerly known as Sudetenland. Town’s
history disappeared after the WWII together with its German
inhabitants expelled by Czechoslovak authorities in an act of
collective punishment. Abandoned houses were settled by
newcomers from across the country, Hungary, Bulgaria, and
Romania. In subsequent 40 years the village of 300 had gone
down to 30.
The village recovered after the fall of communism in 1989. Sixteen
years later there is not much left to be done. Perhaps only to find
the lost past and record the present.
During his search František gradually learns the fates of village’s
past and present residents. Cues lead him to Šléglov native Otilie
Radevová. In 1930s Otilie spent her afternoons at school
transcribing entries on village life to a large book, golden lettering
on its red hardcover. Die Chronik, The Chronicle, the letters read.
After WWII Otilie’s family belonged to the few Schlögelsdorf families
not expelled to Germany. The chronicle had remained in the care of
Otilie’s mother who hided it from everyone. In 1980s the old lady
gave the book to an unknown man who was supposed to take it to
Germany. Since then the book’s fate is unknown.
Twenty-five years later František’s search begins.
It brings the young man from Sudetenland to Germany. He realizes
that his native village exists in two countries at once.
Whether František finds the chronicle is not important. Camcorders
that follow him record stories of the past and present Šléglov
inhabitants. The film becomes the new village chronicle, the story of
the tragic 20th Century in a small village that almost did not survive
its death.
